I'm looking for recommendations for a good Configuration Management Database (CMDB) software that can handle both virtual and physical inventory. It's crucial that the software can be deployed on-premises due to compliance requirements, which limits our options a bit. We want to be able to create rack elevation diagrams, manage port maps, and keep track of server and virtual machine inventory along with configuration management. Change management is not a concern for us as another team manages that with a different tool. I have a few candidates in mind, but I'd love to hear from anyone who has experience using these types of tools.

Have you considered NetBox? With the Services plugin, it can really extend configurations. It shines in terms of rack documentation and IP address management, plus it’s completely free!
At my workplace, we use GLPI, and it’s been working great for us. It’s versatile and helps with inventory management from both physical and virtual perspectives.
I’ve found that GLPI often comes bundled with helpdesk software, so you might get extra features that way. Just be ready to manage it because it can add another task to your upkeep list, which is something to keep in mind for your change management workflow.
Definitely go with GLPI if you are looking for a solid on-prem solution. It has everything you’d need for keeping track of your assets.
I believe ManageEngine Asset Explorer includes a CMDB feature as well. Might be worth checking out for your needs.
