Is My Job Offer for DevOps in Toronto Competitive?

I recently received a job offer from a US startup that's paying in CAD. The offer includes a base salary of $105k CAD and $2700 in RSUs. I have 2 years of experience since graduating and an additional 2.5 years from my co-op terms. My current position, which I landed right out of university, started at $75k and has grown to $90k while working for the federal government. I'm curious—do you think this new offer is a good deal?

It really depends on your career goals. If you want to expand your skills and you're happy with what you’re currently doing, you might want to consider staying where you are. You’re young and have options to move around later, so don’t feel pressured. I’ve jumped between corporate and startup, and I’ve not looked back since!

When comparing $105k in a private startup to $90k in a federal job, it really comes down to what you value. The government job might feel more laid back with lower stress, great benefits, and an awesome pension. In contrast, while a startup can be hype, it often comes with more uncertainty. Just remember, $105k in Toronto won't stretch as far as $90k in Ottawa due to the cost of living difference. If you're after stability and benefits, I'd lean towards the government gig.

That’s a great perspective! I’ve also heard the benefits are much better with government jobs.

True that! I live in Mississauga, work remotely for the government, and love the stability.

Honestly, it sounds like the offer isn’t that great for a real DevOps role. If you’re looking to build experience and you’re okay with the startup vibe, it might work. But if you're really going into a pure DevOps path, you might want to hold out for a higher figure.

So you think the role is more about data infrastructure than true DevOps? That’s a bummer if I'm aiming for a DevOps position!

From my experience working in Toronto, this offer doesn't sound competitive. Our juniors start at around $125k, and it’s definitely becoming more common. So it might be worth negotiating or exploring other opportunities.

That salary range seems low. I’m a Senior with over 6 years of experience, and I’d jump at that offer, but only if I were really in need.

Aside from salary, weigh the work conditions too. Federal jobs can come with benefits that startups might lack even if the pay is lower. If you get a better offer elsewhere, it might be worth considering all factors—work-life balance, stress levels, and overall job satisfaction too!
