Hey everyone! I'm starting college soon for either bioengineering or chemical engineering and I'm on the hunt for a reliable laptop that can last me through my four years of undergrad. My budget is pretty tight, so I'm hoping to find something under $500, maxing out at around $600. I'm considering refurbished Lenovo ThinkPads, but my parents are a bit hesitant about refurbished models since they're concerned about durability over the years. I don't need a gaming laptop; I mostly play the Sims and my current 2016 MacBook struggles with that. Just curious if you have any recommendations or if I should adjust my budget for something decent? Thanks in advance!
Edit: After talking with my parents, they're willing to help me out, so I can extend my budget to around $400-$1000. Any thoughts?

I think you're making the right call with the Lenovo ThinkPads. Just remember to check what software you’ll need for your courses. Intel CPUs, particularly Core i5 or higher, are typically preferred for engineering software. It’s good to have at least 16GB of RAM and a decent amount of storage—maybe consider getting an external SSD for extra space. I had a fantastic experience with my refurbished Dell, but you do have to watch out for minor issues. If you can, try to get a warranty on the refurbished model for some peace of mind!
Refurbished Lenovo ThinkPads are a solid option! They're typically corporate off-lease laptops, so you might find a lot of value for your money compared to new models at that price range. ThinkPads are generally well-built and durable, making them great for long usage. Just ensure you check the specs beforehand, especially if you'll be using specific software. A Core i5 should do the trick, but if you can find a deal on a Core i7, that's even better! And I'd suggest at least 16GB of RAM to keep things running smoothly. Just keep in mind that with any used laptop, there's a bit of risk involved. I’ve been in your shoes; don’t hesitate to ask friends for tips on what to look for!
Totally agree! A backup plan is a must with any laptop, especially if it's refurbished. You wouldn’t want to lose your work due to a technical failure.
Thanks for the advice! I’m not super familiar with Windows, having only used MacBooks, so this is all super helpful.
