Hey folks! I'm in a bit of a pickle and could really use your insight. I just upgraded from an RTX 3070 to a 3090 and also got a new 1440p OLED monitor. I thought I'd see a significant boost in performance with the 3090, but to my surprise, most games are actually running worse than before. The only game that's performing better now is Escape from Tarkov.
For example, in Apex Legends, I'm only getting around 60-70 FPS at lowered settings. PGA Tour 2K21 is pretty much unplayable with only about 20 FPS, and Cyberpunk 2077 is hovering around 40 FPS, even with mixed settings. I used to get over 100 FPS in games like Apex and PGA Tour, and I expected at least a stable 60+ in Cyberpunk with a bit of tuning. So, I'm confused about why my FPS is all over the place.
Here are some specs:
- GPU: RTX 3090
- CPU: Intel i7-12700K
- RAM: 16GB DDR4
- Monitor: 2560x1440 OLED
- OS: Windows 11
- Driver version: Latest at the time of posting
I've checked CPU usage, which is very low, and my temperatures look fine, no overheating issues. I made sure to do a clean install of the drivers after the GPU swap, and all Windows updates are current. Could this be a power issue, a setting I've missed, or is it related to the upgrade in monitor and resolution? I'm at a loss and would appreciate any suggestions!

First off, make sure your 3090 works properly. If you got it secondhand, check if you bought it from a trustworthy source. Also, look at temperatures—check both GPU die averages and hotspots using software like GPU-Z. They shouldn’t exceed 90C. You should also monitor the frequencies to ensure nothing's dropping unexpectedly, which could indicate power problems or temperature issues. If your PSU is under 700W, I’d worry—it should be around 1000W for your setup.
I upgraded to a 1000W PSU to match the card, and the GPU’s temps have been stable at around 82C.
