I'm new to the coding scene here in Toronto, Canada, and while I've spent about a year learning and even built a few projects for my portfolio, I still feel like a rookie. I completed the Odin Project and now I'm diving into Codecademy to boost my JavaScript skills. The problem is, I have no connections and feel unqualified when I check job listings on platforms like Indeed or LinkedIn. What are some effective strategies to help me get my foot in the door? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You don’t need a degree to succeed in this field. Here’s a game plan:
1. Build 2-3 full-stack projects that truly solve real-world problems instead of just creating another todo app. Think of something that matters to you and develop a solution around that.
2. Commit every bit of code you write to GitHub and link your GitHub in your resume. Be ready to explain your code in interviews.
3. Apply to around 10-20 jobs daily and tailor your resume for each one.
4. Network actively on LinkedIn. Reach out for informational interviews and ask for referrals.
5. If you get an interview, research the company and come prepared with a prototype app relevant to them. It shows you’re serious and have initiative.
6. Be relentless with these steps until you land a job—it took me almost 2 years to find my first role, but with perseverance, you will get there!
Bonus: Don’t shy away from entry-level jobs, even if they seem underwhelming. I took a part-time TA position for low pay and it helped me move on to a better role later.
Honestly, if a degree was a surefire ticket to a job, I’d be all in, but that isn’t the case. Focus on building your skills and portfolio instead.
Have you thought about getting a degree? Although it’s not a guarantee for a job, having one might open some doors for you in the long run.
The Odin Project has some great resources about job hunting, and their Discord has success stories you might want to check out. Hearing from others who have been in your shoes can provide some valuable insights on how they landed jobs. Definitely worth a look!
