Why Won’t My New 850W Power Supply Turn On?

Hey everyone! I'm on my first power supply upgrade from a 500W to an 850W because I just got an RTX 3070 and a Ryzen 5 5600. Everything was working fine with my 500W, but when I swapped it out for the new Corsair MWE 850 V2 today, my PC wouldn't turn on at all. I just get this clicking noise from the power supply when I press the power button. I switched back to the 500W, and it powered up without any issues. Did I get a faulty power supply, or is there something I'm overlooking? I made sure to use a similar cable setup as with the old one. Also, my motherboard is an A230M-A Pro. Any thoughts? Thanks!

It sounds like when a power supply clicks like that, it might be shorting out. I’ve seen that happen due to a defective USB device or a power adapter that melted and caused a short. Since you have a modular supply, try disconnecting everything except the motherboard and the extra power cables, then see if it powers on. If it does, start adding components back one by one to see if one of them is causing the issue. I found a bad cable once this way!

Interesting, that makes sense. I was so worried my components were fried when I pressed the power button, but they seem okay with the old PSU. I’ll test for cable issues tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!
