What CPU Should I Choose for Video Editing and Gaming on a $300-$350 Budget?

I'm in the process of building a PC and I need help deciding on the best CPU to fit my needs. My budget is around $300 to $350, and I'm looking for a well-rounded processor that excels in video editing, 3D motion graphics, and music production, but still offers solid gaming performance. I'll be pairing it with an RTX 5070 Ti. I've been considering the Intel i7-14700K, but I'm aware of some reported instability issues. However, I've heard that updating the BIOS can resolve those concerns, plus it comes with a 5-year warranty. On the other hand, I've been cautioned that the LGA1700 platform could be considered a dead socket soon. I wonder if AMD might be a less favorable option for my type of work. What do you all think?

Have you considered the Intel 265K? It's a solid choice for productivity and gaming, and since it's at a good price point, you can use the savings for other components. It might even outperform the 14700K for your use case.

I hadn't thought of the 265K! Definitely sounds like it could be worth looking into.

If you have access to a Microcenter, you might want to check out the 9900X at around $390 which offers excellent performance across the board, especially with power efficiency. Look at some benchmarks comparing the 7800X3D, 9700X, and 7900X; you'll want to see which one stands out for your specific needs. Just remember to check if Intel has patched any known issues with their CPUs before making your final decision.

I'm definitely leaning towards the 9900X now! Just unsure about what motherboard to pair with it.

Good call! Just make sure the motherboard supports all the features you want.

If you're doing a lot of video editing and 3D work, I'd suggest looking into the AMD 7800X3D. It's currently being offered at a discount and while it may be a bit slower for productivity tasks, it still holds its ground. Don't fall for the myth that it can't handle productivity – it just has lower clock speeds than some alternatives. Just keep in mind that the LGA1700 might not have much life left, so that's something to think about.

My main focus is video editing and 3D motion graphics, so I need a CPU that won't hold me back in performance while gaming too. Thanks for highlighting the AMD option!

Exactly! The 7800X3D could be a great fit if your main focus isn’t gaming. It’s important to balance what you need.

Honestly, if you're primarily focused on video editing and 3D modeling, you might even want to consider the option of getting a Mac Mini with an M4 Pro. It could outperform many of the Intel and AMD combinations, especially in creative tasks, and it won’t guzzle as much power.

That's an interesting suggestion! I'll have to weigh the pros and cons of going that route.
