What Skills Should I Focus On for a DevOps Internship in 2025?

I'm a Full-Stack developer eager to move deeper into the DevOps realm. I've already dabbled with building infrastructure on AWS using CDK and SAM, and I have some hands-on experience with Kubernetes—not too advanced, but I know how to use Helm and ArgoCD, plus I'm getting a grip on ingress, storage, and services. I've also done some basic work with Terraform. For those currently in DevOps or who've recently landed internships, what specific skills and tools are companies looking for in a DevOps intern? Are there certain areas within Kubernetes or cloud infrastructure that I should focus on to enhance my candidacy?

You’re on the right track, but don’t forget about CI/CD tools! Familiarize yourself with GitHub Actions or GitLab; they’re essential for automating deployments. Having this knowledge can really make you stand out in interviews. Good luck!

Many companies are looking for developers who can also manage some DevOps tasks, often to save costs. Consider targeting roles that allow you to gain hands-on experience doing both software engineering and DevOps work. This could provide valuable insights, great experience, and looks fantastic on your resume!

It’s great that you have some AWS and Kubernetes experience already! Nowadays, good monitoring tools like APM or Prometheus are super valuable. Being able to contribute to automated testing is also a huge plus, as it shows you can handle the application side effectively. And honestly, start thinking of yourself as more than just an intern; you have a lot to offer!
