Can I Mix Different Brands of RAM in My Server?

I accidentally bought the wrong RAM for my home server! I have some T-Force VulcanZ 2x 8Gb DDR4 3200 sticks already installed, and I just got some G Skill Aegis 2x 8Gb DDR4 3200 sticks. Is it possible to mix these two brands together? They both have the same speed and capacity, but I'm not sure if that's enough to make them compatible.

It should mostly work, but the speed and timings could be unpredictable. Just keep that in mind!

It’s generally okay to mix them, especially if they’re the same speed and capacity, as long as you're not using a Dell motherboard.

Mixing RAM from different brands can cause issues, even if they share specs. I’d recommend returning them and ordering the correct kit.

Thanks for all the feedback! I've decided to return the G Skill sticks and just get the right ones.

Brand names are less important than the memory chips themselves. Sometimes, different chips can prevent XMP/DOCP from functioning, but you can usually mix RAM as long as you run them at their default JEDEC speeds.

I’ve had issues even at JEDEC speeds! Some boards, especially AM5s, can be quite picky about RAM, leading to longer boot times.

DDR4 usually handles mixed RAM better, so you should be fine. Just know it might default to a lower speed regardless.

To be safe, disable XMP in BIOS. Since it’s a server, it’s better to stick with RAM that has similar specifications to ensure all sticks function reliably.
