Confused about Trying Linux via a Virtual Machine

Hey everyone, I'm new to this whole Virtual Machine thing and am a bit lost! I saw a YouTube video explaining how I can use Linux in a web browser. I get that some people might suggest just downloading it on a USB and dual booting, but I'm curious about why I should even consider using Linux in the first place beyond the idea of freedom it offers. I'm hoping to explore whether it would be worth switching to this 'Dark Side'. Is there a way I can emulate different Linux distros through a browser? I did find some VM options that just bring up a terminal, but that's definitely over my head! I want to see what Linux can do without diving into coding—at least not yet!

For Windows users, ORACLE VM VirtualBox is an excellent way to test out Linux. It lets you run Linux on your machine without messing with your current setup. It sounds intimidating at first, but it really is straightforward to try out a few distros without committing to a full installation.

You might want to check out DistroSea where you can run various Linux distros directly in your browser. Just keep in mind that it’s not going to perform as well as if you just booted it from a USB drive. Linux is great for a lot of reasons—like it being more secure and having less tracking than Windows or Mac. If you want to feel in control and customize your OS, Linux is a solid choice! But if those privacy concerns don’t bother you, you can totally stick with what you know!
