My Linux System Has Major Boot Issues – Is My Motherboard Dead or Is It a Driver Problem?

Hey everyone, I've been using Linux for a few months after making the switch from Windows, and I've been primarily using Nobara on my PC setup. Recently, I've run into some frustrating boot issues. My hardware includes an AMD Ryzen 7900X, 32GB of DDR5 RAM, an AMD Radeon 9070XT, and two NVME drives. I previously had a smooth experience until the Plasma 6.4 update, which caused glitches. After trying several distros, I settled back on Nobara. Now, I'm facing slow startup and shutdown times, and occasionally I get stuck on a grey screen during boot with shifting dots, which changes resolution. I've tried rolling back updates and even reinstalling, but nothing seems to work. I checked my BIOS, where I noticed jumbled text but resetting to defaults didn't fix the boot issue. Frustrated, I booted my Alienware PC with the same GPU and RAM and it works perfectly fine, so I'm wondering if this could be an issue with my motherboard or possibly an aging NVME drive.

Honestly, it’s hard to pinpoint the issue without more details. Running a couple of other distros worked just fine, which hints it may not exclusively be a motherboard problem. Maybe consider testing your hardware for issues. You might also want to check your power supply; sometimes, insufficient power can lead to erratic behavior.

It sounds like a tricky situation! Definitely try running `dmesg --level=err` in the terminal after booting to see if it reveals any errors. That log can provide insights into any underlying issues that might be causing the slowdowns. Also, check for any firmware updates for your motherboard and NVME drive that could help improve compatibility with Linux.

Since you’ve already tried multiple distros, it’s worth thinking about if your motherboard is indeed the culprit. Have you considered checking for any physical issues, like dust in slots or loose connections? If the Alienware setup runs smoothly with similar hardware, it might be a configuration or compatibility issue specific to your setup.
