Can I Use a Ryzen 5950X with My B350 Motherboard?

Hey everyone, I've got an older rig with a Ryzen 5 1600 and an ASRock B350 Pro4 motherboard. I've slowly upgraded all my other components but I'm still on the CPU and motherboard. I've read that it's theoretically possible to install a Ryzen 5000 series CPU on my board, but I'm looking for a second opinion before I make any decisions. My budget is pretty tight right now, so I'm thinking of swapping the CPU first and upgrading the motherboard later to take advantage of all the new features. Is this a good plan? Can I really make it work?

You should be okay as long as you update your BIOS. I’m using a 5950X on an X370 board, and it works fine. If you don't absolutely need those 16 cores, I'd suggest looking at a Ryzen 5 5700X or 5600X for better performance-to-cost value.

I had issues trying to get a 5900X to work on my B450; it would boot but crash right after. I suspect the VRMs were the problem, so just be cautious.

The 5950X is supported with a BIOS update, but the VRM on your B350 might struggle under full load. Just curious, what will you mainly be using your PC for?

While you might technically be able to run a Ryzen 9 5950X on a B350 motherboard, it’s generally not advised. There could be some compatibility problems and you might not get the full performance out of it with that setup.

Yes, the 5950X will work as long as you have at least BIOS version 7.40. But honestly, I’m not sure if the extra features of a new motherboard are worth it unless you're really aiming for better memory compatibility or just pushing for that last 10% of performance.
