Is My PC Good Enough for a Higher Refresh Rate Monitor?

Hey everyone! I'm considering upgrading to a new monitor with a refresh rate between 240Hz and 480Hz. I'm currently using a 144Hz monitor, but I'm not sure if my hardware can handle the jump. Here are my specs:
- AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-Core Processor (3.60 GHz)
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 (8 GB)
- 16GB RAM

I mainly play games like Geometry Dash, where FPS is really important for beating challenging levels. I don't play anything too graphically intensive, so I'm not worried about maxing out those types of games. What's the best refresh rate I could realistically achieve? Thanks for the help!

You can aim to play games like League of Legends or older esports titles at 240Hz. But if you’re not planning to upgrade your PC, it's probably not worth it to go for those high refresh rates. For Geometry Dash, capping the FPS at 288 should work just fine!

Your GPU is the key factor here. For most games, hitting 240 FPS is going to be tough, especially with your current setup. You might want to consider a used RTX 3070 or try out your 3050 with a 240Hz monitor first. Also, stick with a 1080p resolution if you want to keep your frame rates up, and I recommend getting an IPS panel for better colors. Just remember, going for higher refresh rates won’t help if your hardware can't keep up!

Thinking of just upgrading the whole PC instead! Backup is easy for me but I worry about cookies. Oh well, better to start fresh with everything! Thanks for the advice.

Not a silly question at all! But are you actually getting anywhere near 240-480 FPS in Geometry Dash with your current setup? If not, then a high refresh rate monitor won’t do you any good since it’ll just refresh the same frames. You could possibly build a new PC with better parts for the price of a high-end monitor.

I figured that's the case! The game does allow uncapped FPS, and I cranked it up to 4000 to see the limit, but it’s way higher than what I’d realistically get. I'm leaning towards a full upgrade to handle things better.
