Is High VRAM Usage Causing My Editing Slowdowns?

Hey everyone! I'm a professional photographer, and lately, I've been experiencing some frustrating slowdowns when editing large photo batches. It feels like my editing software is stuttering and lacks fluidity.

I usually have a video playing on my second monitor while I work, and I've noticed that it also starts skipping. My GPU (the 5080) shows about 35-45% usage and isn't even hitting 50 degrees, so I'm trying to figure out what's going on.

When I monitored my hardware last night, I saw that my VRAM usage is consistently between 14.5 to 15.5 GB. Could this high VRAM usage be causing my issues? It's not technically at 16 GB, but it seems to be close all the time. Disabling the second monitor didn't change the VRAM usage, which makes it even more puzzling.

I don't think the rest of my system is the problem since I'm running a 9800X3D and have 96 GB of RAM. Has anyone else run into this with video editing or productivity tasks?

You're right about your GPU usage! For productivity tasks, software tends to use up VRAM differently compared to gaming. If you're maxing out your VRAM like that, it means your workload requires more than what your 5080 offers. This can lead to performance issues since it spills over into system RAM, which is slower.

To fix this, you might want to consider upgrading to a GPU with more VRAM, like the 3090 or 4090, or finding one that can pair with another GPU if your application supports it. Another option could be using GPU passthrough on your 9800X3D to optimize VRAM usage for your editing tasks.

That makes total sense! It’s surprising how well the 5080 performs in games but struggles with heavy editing. When I try adding effects like denoising or masking, it gets even worse, so I see why hitting system RAM is a problem. Just to clarify, when you say that games allocate VRAM but productivity apps just use what’s available, that's really the distinction? I guess it's time to start looking for a new GPU; these slowdowns are really affecting my workflow!
