Need Help Troubleshooting Slow POS Closing Function

Hey everyone,

I'm running into a frustrating issue with our Point of Sale software that's supported by a pretty small team. We've contacted them a few times, but they insist we're the only ones experiencing this problem and can't replicate it. Here's the situation: our POS uses SQL merge replication where our HQ server acts as the database publisher, and each of our remote sites has their own database subscribed to that. They've also set up replication from registers to the store's database.

The problem arises when the manager tries to close out the tills. This function takes an excessive amount of time on the manager's PC; it can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes, while on the server, it's just about 3 seconds. It's not a major functionality issue, but it's causing our staff to stay extra 15-20 minutes at the end of their shifts, which is pretty frustrating for them.

I've done a bunch of troubleshooting: disabled all security scanning on the firewall, turned off our antivirus and monitoring software, and ran packet captures with no clear issues showing. I also checked Process Monitor and Event Viewer but found nothing suspicious. The vendor keeps pointing the finger at our network, but I'm starting to feel like there's something I'm not seeing. Any ideas on what I can try next?

Have you tried using the software on a different PC? This could help confirm whether it’s just the manager’s machine causing the slowdown. Also, has the vendor provided details on what happens during the closing process? There are a lot of factors at play here. By the way, is your server set up in a RAID array?

Have you considered testing the application on a different user profile on that same PC? If it only misbehaves with the manager's profile, there might be something in their Quick Access in Windows Explorer that’s causing the delay, like a broken link or an inaccessible item. If this doesn’t help, you could think about resetting or rebuilding that user profile as a more affordable fix.

What’s your network setup like for the POS? Are you using Ethernet to connect to a switch with uplinks to a firewall? If the connection is solid, it might not actually be the network at fault.
