I'm looking for advice on how to help my staff who get sick but have left their laptops at the office. We have a critical on-premise application that needs mapped network drives from our file server, while other apps are cloud-based. Ideally, we're trying to move away from our server infrastructure, but this legacy app will be around for a bit longer. I've experimented with Azure Virtual Desktop, but can't justify the cost of a site-to-site Azure VPN just yet. I managed to connect using our FortiClient VPN, but mapping drives without the need for multiple authentications has been tricky since the AVD is Entra joined rather than hybrid. I heard about creating a read-only Domain Controller (DC) in Entra, but it would cost extra for the VM just for sync. I've also tried using a remote management tool for users to access their devices as a temporary fix, but I'm hoping for better solutions. Any suggestions?

I totally get your struggle! Honestly, the best solution is to simply remind your staff to take their laptops home. It's not just about technical workarounds; they need to have their equipment to work effectively. If they were tradespeople, not bringing their tools would be unacceptable. Encouraging them to carry their laptops might be the most straightforward path forward.
Have you thought about calculating the costs involved in finding technical solutions versus the simple fix of reminding employees to take their laptops home? It might help get the C-Suite on board if they see how much effort this laziness is costing.
I’m aware of the costs, and while AVD fits the budget, the technical issues are steering me elsewhere.
This isn't just a tech issue; you've got to tell people to take their laptops home. Don't waste time concocting elaborate solutions when the easiest fix is right in front of you.
I’m exploring options since it’s part of my job. If I can find a budget-friendly way that works, I’m all for it!
Consider checking out Cloudflare Zero Trust. It's similar to a VPN but uses the WARP app, which might suit your needs. We’ve also had luck with a tool that lets people remote into their devices when they’re not at the office, making things easier for everyone.
Our RMM does allow access, but if their device is off, that's a hassle for us. I was thinking of exploring Wake on LAN to facilitate that.
You could think about having a courier deliver the laptop if it comes to that! It’s a bit over the top, but sometimes that might be the best option to consider.
We have actually considered that option!
Absolutely! If they’ve been given a portable laptop, they should take it with them daily. It's just good practice.
