Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a tough spot since my monitor is on its last legs. Here's what I'm dealing with:
- My PC is about 7 years old and runs on Intel UHD Graphics 630 (integrated). It doesn't have HDMI, just VGA and DVI. I bought it prebuilt without really knowing what I was doing.
- Currently, I primarily use the PC for web browsing, Office work, and some light tasks. I don't do any PC gaming as I prefer my Xbox Series X which supports both 1440p and 4K.
So, I'm weighing a few options:
1. Get a 1440p monitor but continue using my current PC, which will only display 1080p on that monitor.
2. Purchase a new PC and a 1440p monitor to take full advantage of the setup. I'm hesitant though because my current PC still works fine, and I don't want to throw money away on a premature replacement. I also worry about how soon it might fail.
3. Settle for a 1080p monitor now, use it for a few years, and then upgrade both the monitor and PC later, but that sounds risky to me in terms of future-proofing.
I'm curious about how much of a downside it is to run 1080p on a 1440p monitor. Will text and UI look awful? Should I just hold off on getting a new PC and make do with 1080p for now? Any advice on finding a balance here without wasting money would be great! Thanks!

If you only play games on your console, you might not need a beefier PC right now. But you could look into picking up a used GPU to help support 1440p if your budget allows.
Upgrading to a 1440p capable PC is a solid move if you can swing it. I made the leap recently and it totally changed my experience! Just ensure it fits within your budget!
What’s your budget here? That'll really determine what options are on the table for you. If you can find a decent used GPU, it might be a cost-effective way to boost your existing setup.
Running 1080p on a 1440p monitor can look pretty poor. For light tasks like browsing, it might be fine, but it’s not ideal for quality. You could get a 1440p monitor now and upgrade your PC later—just keep in mind the downsides of lower resolution.
If you're mostly browsing and handling light tasks, a 1440p monitor should still work decently even with your current setup. You can always get a GPU later on to enhance your experience and make those tasks feel smoother.
