I'm wondering if there's a way for my dad to back up my iPhone SE (7/8) using iTunes without needing to physically touch my phone or his Lenovo laptop. I read that automatic backups are possible if we're on the same WiFi, and we are. However, his laptop is currently closed and stored away. Is there a way for backups to happen automatically without him having to do anything? Thanks for your help!

Actually, for automatic backups through iTunes, your iPhone would generally need to be connected to the computer directly. Recent updates have added a passcode prompt for backup attempts, so it's not as simple as it used to be. You'll want to check if your phone is running the latest iOS version as it might affect the backup process. If your dad's laptop is off or closed, it won’t be able to back up your phone automatically like that.
Unfortunately, there isn't a way to back up your iPhone automatically through iTunes without having a physical connection or the computer actively open. The only way to back up without direct access is using iCloud, but you'd need to ensure enough iCloud storage and that it's set up on your phone.
So, does that mean if his laptop is on but just closed, it still won’t work?
