I'm looking for advice on whether a computer with a Pentium Silver 1.10GHz CPU and 8GB of RAM can run Linux smoothly. What distributions would you recommend for this setup?

With those specs, it’s a bit of a rough ride. I'd go for Lubuntu or another lightweight distro. Just keep in mind that heavier gaming distros might struggle.

True, but don’t forget the turbo boost capabilities; they can help performance with lighter tasks!

I’m running Pop!_OS on a similar CPU with 4GB, and it’s working great for light usage!

Definitely usable, though it might feel a tad slow. I suggest going for Linux Mint; it's great for everyday tasks like email and photo organizing. Debian is another option, but it could be a bit much for a newbie.

Linux Mint with XFCE or Bodhi Linux 7.0 are solid choices for your specs. Mint is user-friendly and a favorite for beginners!

I found Bodhi a bit tricky to navigate, but it used to be popular. My experience wasn’t the greatest, so Mint might be better for easy use.

The Pentium Silver actually runs pretty well! Even with 4GB of RAM, I've successfully used Debian or Mint with XFCE on similar setups. You're good to go with 8GB!

Thanks for your insights! This will be for a user who's not tech-savvy—they'll mainly be organizing photos and checking email. I usually stick to Mint, but the 1.10GHz had me wondering about performance.

Your CPU design is different from older models, so don’t worry too much! I've got a similar setup, and Linux runs really smoothly on my Dell Mini PC. Just keep in mind your CPU is a bit slower. You'll probably be fine!
