Do I Need to Backup Devices If Using M365 and OneDrive?

As someone who's been working on-premises and is just starting to explore Microsoft 365 and Azure, I'm curious about backup strategies. If our users are utilizing a Microsoft 365 backup solution and are syncing their files to OneDrive, do we still need a separate backup solution for their devices like desktops and laptops?

Exactly! Workstations nowadays are pretty much considered temp setups, not pets that you need to coddle. Once the data’s in OneDrive or SharePoint, and your users are using those instead of saving stuff on their local machines, you're in a good place.

But my concern is how sure are we that all essential data is actually being stored in OneDrive or Teams, rather than just sitting in random folders? If users haven’t been trained and keep saving important files to, say, their Downloads or desktop, you might need to rethink the setup. Plus, have you actually tested the Microsoft 365 backup to see if you can retrieve specific files? Testing is key to ensuring those backups are reliable!

Valid points! Also, beyond just OneDrive, if you’re using a good third-party SaaS backup for M365 (like Entra or others) and you set up proper folder redirection, it can make life a lot easier. Just keep an eye on how users handle their files—sometimes they'll still keep important stuff on their desktops or in documents, and you want to make sure you're capturing that efficiently.

Nah, once you're in the cloud sphere with tools like OneDrive, you really don't need to worry about backing up workstations. If a device fails or needs to be wiped, just reset it and let Autopilot or Intune handle the setup—everything is stored in the cloud and will sync back. Just make sure you have a solid external cloud backup solution since you don't want to solely rely on Microsoft for those backups!
