Why won’t my USB-A port detect devices despite being able to charge?

Hey everyone, I've got a ROG Zephyrus G14 GA402RK laptop running Windows 11, and I'm having a strange issue with one of my USB-A 3.2 ports. It can charge my phone and other devices just fine, but when I try to connect anything for data transfer, like a USB dongle or cable, it just doesn't recognize them. The other USB-A port works perfectly, so I'm baffled. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this?

Have you tried using different cables? Some cables are made just for charging and won't transfer data. Unfortunately, you can't always tell the difference just by looking at them, but typically, data cables are a bit pricier. This could be a simple fix if that's the case!

This was my first thought too! Sometimes the easiest solutions are the best.

I found that if I plug the cable into my phone through that same port, it still detects it and lets me access its storage.

You could try booting using a Linux Live distro. If the port works fine there, it probably means there's a driver issue. If it doesn’t, then it might be a BIOS setting that's off or a hardware problem.

You might need to clear out any ghost USB devices. I found a guide online that shows you how to do that. You can also try uninstalling and then reinstalling the port through the device manager; that might help resolve the issue.
