Is My Hard Drive Dead or Is There Something I Can Do?

Hey everyone! I've been having some serious trouble with my hard drive, and I'm starting to think it might be failing. I've got a 1TB Seagate 7200rpm HDD that I mainly use for storage, and I recently tried to format it to repurpose it. But when I started a full format, everything froze up, and after a restart, the drive was listed as raw. I tried to quick format it, but got an error saying it didn't complete successfully. The Event Viewer is flooded with warnings about errors on the device. I even checked the status with diskpart and chkdsk, both claiming it's fine, but then I keep seeing weird stuff like the drive oddly starting to format on its own. I've also noticed spikes in disk activity from a drive that's supposedly offline. It's around 7 years old but hasn't been used that much. Do I just assume it's fried, or could it be something else? Any advice on what might have gone wrong or how to prevent this in the future would be much appreciated!

It sounds like your hard drive is toast, unfortunately. If CrystalDiskInfo can't detect it, that usually means it's beyond saving. Definitely time to look into getting a new drive—switching to an SSD is a great idea since they’re way faster and more reliable nowadays.

You might want to double-check your drive’s SMART stats using CrystalDiskInfo. If it’s reporting errors or if you can’t see it at all, that’s a strong sign it’s failing. And remember, using chkdsk with the /r option is better for repairing bad sectors, but it’s more about fixing file system stuff, not diagnosing hardware faults.

Yeah, it definitely sounds like the HDD has seen its last days, especially with all those error messages. If it was giving you issues even before this, it’s better to cut your losses now and upgrade to a reliable SSD. They can save you a lot of headaches in the long run.
