Is Timeshift Still the Best Option for System Backup and Restore?

I've seen some users struggle with Timeshift. A popular YouTuber mentioned his Arch install failed to restore correctly with it. It's usually a good idea to keep essential files on an external drive just in case, and remember that snapshots aren't backups for your personal data.

From what I’ve seen, Timeshift can work well if you understand how to use it correctly. Restoring a system isn't always straightforward, and Timeshift doesn't back up your home directory by default. So if you have important files there, it’s good to be cautious.

I've had a pretty good experience with Timeshift after I messed up my install of Davinci Resolve. It restored just fine for me! Another method I tried was using 'tar' and that worked too. I generally back up my important data to another computer using duplication, which adds an extra layer of safety.

There’s definitely a risk involved with system restoration, and it really depends on your setup. I suggest doing a Clonezilla backup first if you’re about to experiment with something risky. Timeshift is great for snapshots, but make sure you're aware of its limitations regarding home directories.
