Is My Ryzen 5 5600X Bottlenecking My Gaming Performance?

I have a gaming rig with a Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 3060 Ti, 64 GB of DDR4 RAM, and an AM4 motherboard. Lately, I've noticed that modern games are barely running on my setup, and I suspect the CPU might be the bottleneck. I'm considering upgrading to a 5700X3D if I can find it at a decent price, but I'm not sure if that's the right move.

For example, I'm struggling with the new Indiana Jones game, which seems to require ray tracing that can't be turned off. Even on the lowest settings, with DLSS set to performance mode, I'm facing low VRAM errors and frame rates that fluctuate dramatically, dropping to as low as 7 fps. In contrast, games like Doom: The Dark Ages run smoothly. I'm confused because both the Xbox Series X and PS5, which have lesser specs, run these games much better than my PC.

I'd like to know if the 5600X is indeed bottlenecking my gaming performance and whether an upgrade to the 5700X3D would provide a significant improvement. I also do video editing and audio mixing, so a better processor may enhance those tasks too. If upgrading wouldn't be very beneficial, I might just save up for a whole new AM5 system. I'm also aware that selling an old PC isn't easy, as most people prefer to buy parts separately.

You're right; the 5700X3D can be a great upgrade, but don’t forget your GPU is holding you back right now. VRAM issues are a real pain in modern games, so let's tackle that first. Then you can decide on that CPU upgrade later. You’ll get better results all around with a new GPU!

Your Ryzen 5 5600X is actually a solid CPU for gaming, especially at 1080p. Have you checked what resolution you’re running? The Indiana Jones game is particularly demanding on VRAM, and the RTX 3060 Ti may struggle with its 8GB in some scenarios—especially if it's using ray tracing. It might not just be you!

Those components are still decent! Monitor your system while gaming—look for overheating or instability. There might be something wrong, like a malware issue or just a need for a system cleanup. If the 5600X and 3060 Ti are hitting their potential, you could actually be fine at 1440p too!

Upgrading to a 5700X3D would boost your performance, but I’d recommend focusing on the GPU first. Your 3060 Ti is getting a little dated, and making sure you have enough VRAM is critical for newer titles. You could also sell your current GPU and put those funds towards a better one!

I think your CPU is doing fine. Check Task Manager for CPU usage during your game. If it's not hitting 100%, then your processor isn't the issue. It seems like a GPU upgrade could be what you need instead, particularly since your current GPU is displaying VRAM limits. Consider something with more VRAM to handle modern titles better!

Good point! The older GPU architecture could be your game's weak link.

Definitely! Those consoles have more optimized GPUs for gaming, plus shared memory which helps with performance.
