My GPU seems to have died after a sudden shutdown – what can I do?

Hey everyone, I had a bit of a scare with my PC today. It shut down unexpectedly while I was gaming, and I suspect it might have overheated during a long session of Civ 6. After trying to reboot, I could hear the fans running, but there was no signal on my monitor. I noticed the VGA LED was lit on the motherboard, which has me concerned. I tried reseating my graphics card (a Sapphire RX 470), but there's still no signal. This card is almost nine years old, so could it finally be dead? I'm looking for advice on how to further diagnose this issue. Unfortunately, my CPU doesn't have integrated graphics, so I can't just swap HDMI ports to troubleshoot. The GPU lights up, but the fans aren't spinning, which adds to my worry. Here's my build for reference: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F, RX 470, 32GB RAM, and a 750W power supply. Any thoughts?

Have you tried checking the power connections to the GPU? Sometimes a loose cable can cause such issues.

Not yet, but that’s a good point! I will check the connections.

I’ve had a similar situation before with my GPU just quitting. What worked for me was turning off the system, unplugging the HDMI cable from the monitor for about 30 seconds, then reconnecting it. This trick might help revive your setup! Not sure if it applies to AMD cards, but it's worth a shot!

I appreciate the suggestion! I will definitely give that a try later.

How old is your GPU, exactly? Just curious if it’s nearing the usual lifespan.

It's almost 9 years old!

It's definitely possible that your RX 470 has reached the end of its life, considering its age. The lack of fan spin is a pretty strong indicator that something might be wrong. If you can, think about upgrading to a newer GPU; something like an RTX 2070 would offer a significant performance boost. Good luck!

Thanks for your thoughts! Yeah, it lasted a good run. I’ll be exploring replacement options tonight.
