Is Upgrading to a 1440p OLED Monitor Worth It for Gaming?

I've got a Dell S2721DGF monitor that runs at 1440p and 165Hz, and I'm thinking about upgrading to a 1440p OLED monitor that can handle 240Hz or even 320Hz. I've heard a lot about how great OLED displays are, especially in terms of picture quality, but I'm curious if the upgrade is really worth it in terms of gaming performance and visuals. I play mostly AAA games where I aim for 120fps on max settings and occasionally delve into Overwatch and Battlefield, where a higher refresh rate would be a bonus. However, I'm not jumping to 4K since I want to maintain performance. With my current specs (RTX 5080, 13700KF, 32GB 6400MHz, NVMe SSD), is it worth the investment mainly for improved picture quality?

I'd say go for the OLED upgrade, especially if money isn't a concern. It definitely adds a better visual experience compared to traditional panels. But, if you're on a tight budget, just stick with what you have for now since 165Hz is still pretty excellent.

I think an OLED upgrade would be fantastic! Just don't expect the refresh rates to change your gaming experience dramatically, as 165Hz already feels smooth. Focus on the better colors and response times with OLED. Plus, enjoy the bragging rights of having a premium display!

If you're set on visuals, OLED is pretty hard to beat, but keep in mind that the higher refresh rates (like 320Hz) might not be as noticeable depending on what you're playing. 240Hz is a solid target, but don’t pay too much extra for what you might not fully perceive. You might get a more affordable 240Hz OLED and still be thrilled with the visual upgrade!

Honestly, I'd say the switch to OLED is worth it, especially for the visuals. OLED panels offer superior color and contrast, which will definitely enhance your gaming experience. As for the refresh rate, 240Hz is nice, but your current 165Hz is already solid. If you're just looking for better visuals for that birthday treat, go for it!

Yeah, it's mostly for the visuals. It's my 40th birthday coming up so I figured I'd treat myself to something nice, and my specs are already absolutely fine, so a monitor is the only place I can really upgrade my setup meaningfully.

When it comes to upgrading, it really depends on what you're looking for. OLED does bring a noticeable improvement in contrast and colors that many find worth it. However, it might not drastically improve your gaming performance unless you're upgrading to a format your graphics card can't match. If you're satisfied with your current monitor, you might not feel a big difference except for better visuals.
