Which CPU Should I Choose for Gaming at 1440p: 9600X, 7600X3D, or 7800X3D?

I'm planning to build a gaming rig that will run games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth: Wukong at 1440p on ultra settings. I'm considering the 9600X, which is about $290 CAD (occasionally drops to $220), or should I spend more on the 7600X3D ($370), 7800X3D ($510), or the 9800X3D ($640)? Is it worth going for the more expensive options or will the 9600X suffice?

If you're gaming at 1440p with that 5070 Ti, you’re likely to hit a GPU bottleneck before a CPU one anyway. The difference in frame rates between the CPUs at that resolution isn’t huge; you might only see a few extra FPS with the pricier options. Consider your gaming style—if you like CPU-heavy games, the 7600X3D might be worth it. Otherwise, save your cash!

That makes complete sense, thanks!

From what I’ve observed, as you increase resolution, the performance gap narrows significantly. The 9800X3D might give you higher FPS at lower resolutions, but at 1440p, the increase is minimal. If you plan on playing at higher resolutions, the 9600X will serve you just fine, especially for the price.

Thanks for breaking that down!

Honestly, any of those CPUs would work well for gaming, but if you're looking to future-proof a bit, the 7600X3D is a great middle ground. The extra investment comes with the benefit of the 3D V-cache, which can really help in certain games. But if you find the 9600X at that lower price again, it’s still a solid choice for the games you mentioned!

Got it, appreciate the advice!

I recently checked out some benchmarks, and there's not much difference in performance between the 7600X and 9800X3D, especially at 1440p with your GPU. So, if budget is a concern, you might be fine with the 9600X. Just make sure to look out for deals!
