What Underlying Technology Powers AWS EBS Volumes?

I'm curious about the kind of storage technology that AWS Elastic Block Store (EBS) volumes are built on. I've looked around, but I couldn't find a clear answer online. Specifically, how is AWS able to deliver such impressive throughput and IOPS while maintaining a high level of resilience in a multi-tenant cloud environment? I wonder if it's based on something like Ceph or if it's an entirely different system. Any insights would be appreciated!

AWS EBS is actually powered by a proprietary system. They don’t use off-the-shelf software or hardware for it. There's a detailed article that covers some of this—though not all—on how block storage has evolved at AWS.
