A few months back, my iPhone was stolen. Recently, I received a message claiming my phone was located. In a rush, I entered my phone's passcode, thinking it might be legitimate, but then I worried it was a scam. I didn't provide my iCloud account info, though. Now I'm curious: can someone reset my phone or use it solely with the passcode I accidentally gave them? What are the limitations of what they can do?

If a scammer got your iCloud password along with access to your physical SIM card, they could hijack your Apple account. They might even wipe your phone and remove the activation lock. Since you only gave out your phone's passcode, you’re a bit safer. Make sure to change your Apple ID password immediately and contact your carrier to disable the SIM if you haven't already.
With only the phone's passcode, they can’t do much if they don’t have access to your iCloud account. They can’t reset the device or remove it from your account. Since you’ve placed the phone in lost mode, they won’t be able to use it until they bypass that. Have you checked to see if it's still listed on your account? If it's offline, that's a good sign you're somewhat protected.
