I'm part of the device upgrade program, which lets me set up my preorder in advance. You can check the app after the 17 is officially announced to see if you'll have that option. If not, just log in right when preorders go live and be patient! The app can get super busy with everyone trying to order at once.
Honestly, preordering is so much more straightforward now than it used to be. I usually just set an alarm, open the Apple Store app when preorders start, and place my order for either delivery or pickup on release day. Super easy!
I've learned to avoid preordering right on release day. Those early devices can sometimes have issues since they haven't had time to iron out the bugs. Waiting a few weeks might save you from getting a defective unit!

That might not be true for the iPhone. The hardware changes aren't usually drastic, so I think it's safe to preorder.
