I have an iPhone 8 that's completely unresponsive - the screen is black and I can't seem to turn it off, no matter what I do. It's really frustrating because my alarm keeps going off every morning at 6 am at full volume, even after four days of this! I've tried the usual up/down volume and power button method, but it doesn't seem to work. Is there any other way to shut it down, or should I just wait for it to die on its own?

You could try a couple of things: If the screen is black, first make sure to open the Settings app. Tap on 'General' and then scroll down to 'Shut Down'. If you can't see anything, you might want to just hold the sleep button until it chimes. Then try telling Siri to disable all alarms if Siri is set up. But honestly, if nothing works, try taking it off the charger and leaving it off until the battery drains. That can sometimes help.
Another idea is to completely remove it from the charger and let the battery drain. That should stop the alarms too, but it might take a while if the battery is still charged. Just make sure you don’t miss any important calls when it finally shuts down!
But if I remember correctly, if the screen is totally unresponsive, that might not even work. Maybe you should just wait for the battery to die and see if that resets it.
