I have an old iPad 2 from around 2011 or 2012 that I used as a family calendar. Recently, the battery has expanded, cracking the screen, and now the iPad won't power on. It's also logged into my Apple ID and isn't password protected. I'm planning to recycle it today since it's potentially hazardous with the battery issue, but I'm worried that someone might access my Apple ID through it. Since I can't turn it on or log out, what steps should I take to secure my account?

You should definitely remove it from your Apple ID using another device. This way, even if someone gets their hands on it, they won't be able to access your iCloud since it won't be linked to your account anymore. Just go to your Apple ID settings on your iPhone and check the devices section to remove it from there. Make sure you're doing this before you recycle it!
Yes, removing it will log it out of iCloud. It’s a good move especially since you can't access it to erase it first. Just ensure you do this before you take it for recycling!
