Help! My iCloud is locked after my iPhone was stolen

I recently had a pretty scary experience in Barcelona where my iPhone was stolen while I was working remotely. I noticed it was missing about 30-40 minutes later and immediately tried to lock it using my roommate's phone, but it was still unlocked. When I attempted to lock it again, I got signed out of my iCloud account. After flying back to Chicago, I received a new iPhone from my insurance and kept my original phone number. However, when I tried logging into my iCloud, it said my account was locked. I attempted to reset my password but found a different phone number now linked to my account. I've reached out to Apple for help recovering my account, but I'm struggling to regain access. I have over 10 years of precious photos and videos stored on iCloud from my travels around the world, and I really need to get back in. Any advice?

Next time, make sure you enable Stolen Device Protection on your iPhone. When it's activated, the thieves won't be able to change your passcode or iCloud password without Face ID and a delay. It’s a really helpful feature to use when you’re out and about!
