Why Is My Hard Drive So Slow All of a Sudden?

I've got a Seagate Barracuda 4 TB internal HDD that's been acting up lately. It's running as a secondary storage for my games, and I bought it just last October. Recently, after transferring some games from my laptop, the drive's performance took a nosedive. Accessing folders or copying files takes ages, and even PS2 emulation is freezing during load times. I first noticed this after transferring a large 40 GB game, and then things got erratic with a second game, getting stuck at 0 kb/s. I ended the Steam process thinking that may have caused some issue. I've run chkdsk and rebooted but didn't see any improvement. CrystalDiskInfo shows the HDD is in good shape, and I even freed up some space by moving about 150 GB of games to another drive, but it's still sluggish. Could this be a sign my hard drive is failing? Also, would the 2-year warranty I have help in this situation?

Have you tried defragmenting the drive? It can help with speed issues. Just check out Microsoft's support page for how to do that. It might solve your problem!

Timing might be tricky for me to do this, especially with storms coming! But once winter hits and it's calmer, I’ll definitely give it a shot. By the way, I ran the Windows optimizer and it said my HDD is fine, 0% fragmented. Plus, PS2 emulation stutters a lot less now!
