Why won’t my laptop detect my earphones anymore?

I own a Dell laptop running Windows 10, and just last night, my earbuds stopped working. I've tested them on my phone, so I know they're fine. Whenever I plug them in, the sound still comes from the laptop's speakers instead of the earbuds. I've restarted my laptop multiple times and even cleaned the earphone jack with a Q-tip, but nothing changed.

I read online that updating the audio driver might help, so I did that. The update required me to restart my laptop twice. After the first restart, my headphones worked again, but after the second restart, they weren't detected once more. It seems like the hardware can recognize them, but something isn't quite right. I'm feeling lost and not sure what the next steps should be.

I've had a similar issue recently. Sometimes, it's just a software glitch. What fixed it for me was uninstalling the audio driver completely and then reinstalling it. You might want to give that a shot.

Thanks for the tip! I had the same issue and was able to fix it using your method.

Damn, that really sucks. Did you ever find a solution?
