I'm looking to build a PC with an R5 5600 and a B450 motherboard. I'm wondering if updating the BIOS is necessary to get it to boot into Windows, or is it just for performance improvements?

It is indeed required. Without the update, your system won't boot with the R5 5600.
If your B450 motherboard has a label saying it's '5000 ready', then you’re all set! Some manufacturers update the BIOS before shipping. If not, you might need an older CPU to do the update or use the BIOS flashback feature if your board supports it.
Yes, you'll need the BIOS update to recognize the R5 5600 properly. It's a must to get it working with your motherboard.

So, I guess that means I need to borrow a Ryzen 3000 just to do the BIOS update, right?
