Can I use a PCIe x8 card in a PCIe x16 slot?

I recently picked up a Gigabyte Windforce OC RTX 5060 Ti, which has a PCIe x8 connection. My motherboard (Gigabyte B760M Gaming Plus WiFi) has a PCIe x16 slot, but I'm having trouble finding an adapter that lets me connect it. Is it safe to just stick the x8 card into the x16 slot, or should I be looking for an adapter? Any advice would be appreciated!

You don’t need to worry! You can directly insert your x8 card into the x16 slot, and it will run perfectly fine at x8 speed. Graphics cards designed for fewer lanes are designed to fit in larger slots without any issues.

But since it's physically smaller, are you sure it won’t cause any damage to the card?
