Could my phone be hacked if I’m getting strange notifications?

A few years ago, my email got hacked, but I managed to regain access and implemented all recommended security measures. Recently, I received a Microsoft Authenticator notification with a code to log into my email, which I didn't initiate. I'm not too concerned about my email since I rarely use it anymore, but I'm worried about a strange notification my phone keeps displaying. It shows a warning triangle icon with the message "Authentication error while connecting to email provider" along with the email address. Oddly enough, it doesn't appear in my notification history when I check my settings. Previously, I noticed a history of numerous login attempts on my Microsoft account, and my email Inbox is overwhelmed with spam. The first time I clicked the notification, it seemed dodgy, so I closed all apps right away. Can someone offer advice on whether my phone might be hacked or how to handle this situation?

You might want to check which app is sending that notification. It could be related to your email being accessed through brute force attempts due to previous breaches. I'd suggest logging into your email and changing the password to something strong and unique right away. If you don’t plan on using the email anymore, consider closing that account. Also, it would be smart to start using a password manager to create and store strong passwords for your important accounts.

Sounds like your email address is vulnerable to unauthorized access, especially since you've had breaches before. Definitely consider using haveibeenpwned.com to check for data leaks. If you can't identify the app sending the notifications, it might be worth resetting your phone's security settings or conducting a factory reset. Always better to be safe!
