What’s the Best Laptop and OS Setup for My 82-Year-Old Dad?

I'm looking for advice on a laptop and operating system setup that's senior-friendly for my 82-year-old father, who has been facing some challenges with technology lately. He's been using an iPhone and MacBook, but is now locked out of his Apple account and struggling with his devices. I want something that allows me to have remote access so I can help him without him needing to do much. Ideally, I need an OS that is completely locked down, where everything is set up for him (apps, bookmarks, etc.) and he can't change anything. It should also always be in full-screen mode, prevent him from resizing windows, and manage software updates without requiring his input. Since he has trouble remembering passwords, I want a setup that uses passkeys or biometric login. Plus, I'm looking for a solution that avoids the complications of a tablet's small keyboard. Any suggestions?

One option you might consider is an immutable Linux OS. They can be locked down really well, and you have control over the setup. Just keep in mind that the remote access features may vary, and sometimes they require a bit of tech know-how to manage updates. But in terms of preventing changes, it could work well for you guys.

For a more user-friendly experience, you might want to check out ChromeOS Flex. It’s designed for simpler use, but realize that unattended remote access is mainly suited for enterprise settings. If most tasks can be done in a web browser, it could be worth a shot.

I personally would lean towards a Mac as Windows has a habit of doing weird things that can confuse seniors. With a Mac, I can help with updates during visits, instead of battling unexpected interruptions from updates.

If your dad is struggling, maybe cutting back on tech would be wise. A safer bet could be a simple Apple device since at least he’s familiar with it. If he does need access to a computer, I'd suggest setting him up somewhere where someone can keep an eye on him.

Have a look at Zorin OS. It's pretty straightforward and meets your requirements nicely. Create a non-admin account for him and keep the admin password to yourself. For remote access, you can use TeamViewer or similar tools to help him out. Plus, I recommend using Firefox with privacy extensions to make sure he's safe online.
