Hey everyone! I'm curious about the relevance of MDADM RAID these days. Some folks argue that it's becoming obsolete, especially with modern filesystems like ZFS and BTRFS taking center stage. In particular, I'm interested because I typically use MDADM for RAID 1 on my PC for both boot and data, and it seems to be working just fine. On RHEL and its derivatives, it appears that ZFS support isn't fully integrated, and BTRFS relies on third-party support. So, is MDADM truly considered obsolete? How many of you are still using it in production environments? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

No way is MDADM obsolete! It’s one of the most straightforward and dependable ways to set up RAID, especially for software RAID-1. On RHEL, if you want a RAID setup, you're pretty much left with MDADM, so it's very much in use.
I still use MDADM for production, mainly for RAID 1 mirrored boot drives. It's reliable and easy to handle, which fits our needs perfectly.
Thanks for sharing! What would you consider a catastrophic failure scenario for your setup?
Thanks for clarifying! I guess it really depends on your setup and needs.
