Help! My External Hard Drive Won’t Start Up

I've got an older Seagate external hard drive that's been acting up since I moved last year. It won't show up on any of my computers, just makes some noise but doesn't do anything. I took it to a repair shop the other day, and they quoted me $1000 to recover it, which seems outrageous! I'm not even sure what I have on there, but I think there are some important photos from my time working at a magazine. I tried using Disk Drill to recover the files, but it didn't detect anything. Does anyone have any advice on what I can do? I need to pick it up today to save that $1,000!

What model of Seagate hard drive do you have? It's good to know what kind of noise it's making too. Sometimes, a light clicking sound can indicate it's having trouble starting up, so I might suggest checking if it's a Seagate FreeAgent or something similar.

Honestly, my only recommendation is to invest in backups for the future. Using multiple flash drives or external drives that you can easily disconnect and turn off is a smart move. Seagate's quality really took a nosedive around 2010. That could explain why you're facing issues now.
