Why Does My PC Smell Like Burning Plastic?

I have a Xeon E5-2680 v4 with 32GB of RAM and an RX 580 video card, powered by a Mars MP700 PSU. Recently, I plugged in my headphones, and my PC randomly shut down. The next time I powered it on, I heard a weird ticking noise but it wouldn't start. After another attempt, it powered on but started emitting a burning plastic smell while I was gaming. Strangely, the smell disappears once I turn it off. Can anyone help me figure out how to fix this issue?

I had a similar burning smell coming from my PC once. I ended up doing a complete teardown and discovered that the thermal paste was completely dried out. I scraped it off, applied fresh paste, and after reassembling, the smell was gone!

Did your CPU overheat at all?

It sounds like your PSU might be failing. I wouldn't recommend turning it back on until you get a replacement. It could cause more damage, and hopefully, nothing else in your system got fried!

Unfortunately, I think you're right. I've been researching this issue, and everything points to the PSU being the problem. Thanks for the tip!
