Best VPN or ZTNA Solutions for Small Remote Teams?

Hey everyone! I'm looking for some advice on VPN or remote access alternatives for my small business. We've got fewer than 20 employees, and about 80% of our team works from home. We've been using NordLayer, but unfortunately, the experience has been pretty rough. Their solutions often just involve uninstalling and reinstalling the client, and their customer support hasn't been very responsive or helpful.

Here's a bit about our setup: all staff use company-managed MacBooks (managed via Jamf), and I'm the only IT support. So, ease of setup and management is crucial for us. Security is a top priority, but we also need something that's stable and user-friendly for our less tech-savvy team members. We're open to traditional VPNs or Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) solutions if it makes sense.

What we're looking for is reliable connectivity without the hassle of constant reinstalls, decent support, compatibility with Jamf-managed Macs, and something that scales well as we grow. If you have any recommendations or experiences (good or bad) with providers like Perimeter 81, Twingate, GoodAccess, or any others, I'd really love to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance!

I’ve had good experiences with Cloudflare Warp; it’s generally pretty reliable. Zscaler is also a solid option if you’re looking for something robust.

We use StrongDM, but it is a bit on the pricey side. It’s a Zero Trust proxy and works well with various resources. I’ve also looked into Cloudflare Warp, but it can be a bit complex at first and costs can add up if you need extra features.

What firewall are you currently using? Sometimes the firewall setup can impact connectivity with these services, so it’s good to know!

As someone who’s familiar with Twingate, I can vouch for their support. They offer biweekly live onboarding sessions and seem to care about helping users get set up properly. If you try them out, don't hesitate to reach out with questions!

You should really check out Twingate, I think you’ll find it works great for remote teams! They're designed to handle a lot of the issues you’re facing with NordLayer.
