I've been handling my backups by setting up an NFS mount on the backup host and using a script to perform nightly backups with restic, complete with backup pruning. I've also implemented systemd timers to manage the schedule. While this approach works for me, I'm looking for a more efficient way to monitor backup failures instead of just tracking the systemd processes and sending generic alerts. Is there a better method out there?

You could consider using HealthChecks.io. It's great for monitoring cron jobs and playbooks to ensure everything runs smoothly. You can use either the paid version or self-host it for better control.
Have you checked out Bareos? It simplifies the backup process significantly. Plus, there's a good video tutorial that walks you through the setup. You might find it really helpful!
Rsync and ZFS snapshots are solid options for backups as well. They provide flexibility and efficiency in managing your backups. You might want to look into how those two can fit into your current setup.
I've written a Prometheus exporter for Bacula that has worked great for me over the years. If you're interested, I can share more details about it!
