Is it worth upgrading from a 3900X to a 5950X or should I just build a new PC?

I've been considering upgrading my CPU from the 3900X to the 5950X since my current PC is almost 6 years old. My setup includes an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER and I don't have any major issues with my 2K (2560x1440) gaming experience. I mainly do gaming, but I also handle some 4K video processing about once or twice a month. So, is it worth spending a few hundred bucks on the 5950X, or should I save up for a new build with a 9950X3D instead?

Honestly, unless you really need the extra cores for heavy tasks, you might not need to upgrade to a 16-core CPU. If gaming is your main focus, the 5900X could be a better fit since you don’t do video processing often.

I understand what you're saying. I do video editing, but it's only a couple of times a month, so I'm not sure if the 5950X is necessary for that.

If you're planning to sell your old CPU, upgrading to the 5900X might not cost you much considering the performance increase across the board. It's a strong CPU for both gaming and rendering, even if you're doing video work occasionally.

I went from a 3700X to a 5950X because I do video editing and multitask a lot. However, if you're also considering a GPU upgrade at the same time, you might not notice much difference in gaming performance right away.

Going for a 5000 series processor like the 5900X is a solid choice, but if you're not heavily utilizing all those cores, there's no need for the 5950X just for gaming. What other activities do you use your PC for besides gaming?

From what you've shared, it seems like sticking with your current setup for now could be the best option. Save until you really need to upgrade for a better improvement.
