How Can I Safely Transport My Gaming PC on a Plane?

I'm moving to another country for college next year and I can't bear to leave behind my new and improved gaming PC. The challenge is that my PC is quite large, making it difficult to fit in a suitcase. I've seen suggestions about removing internal components and padding everything with clothes or foam to ensure it doesn't shift around during transit. However, I'm also considering using the original packaging, though I worry it might be risky due to potential theft. On top of that, I need to transport my big monitor. Should I dismantle my PC, secure each part, and just reassemble it when I arrive?

You might want to consider shipping it instead. Using a freight carrier like UPS or FedEx, properly insured, can save you a lot of hassle. Checked bags can get thrown around, and larger items might incur extra charges or could be separated from your luggage. I've seen friends have issues with that when traveling with bulky bags.

I’d recommend avoiding FedEx if you can. Stick to UPS or USPS; I've had too many packages go missing with FedEx.

Packing it tightly with light clothes, like t-shirts, can help fill the spaces and prevent movement inside. Just make sure to use static protection for any removed cards. Also, if you have the original packaging, that's really the best bet.

If you have the original box with all the padding, definitely use that! If not, consider getting a larger box and packing it with foam or packing chips. Removing the GPU and putting it in an ESD-safe bag is also a good idea. You want to keep your components safe and secure.

Definitely keep the hard drive with you since it's crucial for data safety. For the journey, you can also use expanding foam inserts to secure the components inside. Or, depending on how large your package is, freight shipping might be another viable route.

Shipping it is probably your safest option. If you can, load up the case with packing peanuts and ship it that way so it's insured against damage. As a backup plan, you could always just take everything apart and buy a new case where you're moving to.
