I'm considering upgrading my CPU to get more out of my RTX 5080. Currently, I have an i7 12700K, which has been performing decently for my gaming needs. However, I've noticed some CPU limitations at times, and I'm trying to reach 120fps at 3440x1440 resolution. This doesn't happen often, but I want to know if others think upgrading to the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a good choice now, or if I should wait for the AM6 CPUs that may come out in a few years. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Waiting for AM6 could be a long haul since it's rumored for 2028, and there should be at least one more AM5 CPU series before we get to that. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D could deliver significant improvements over your 12700K, especially if you're looking for higher frame rates in demanding games. It really comes down to whether you feel you need an upgrade now, or if you can hold out for a while longer.
Yeah, the wait for AM6 is rough. I get how a game like Cyberpunk might push your CPU. If you see a major uplift with the 9800X3D, it could really help with those frames. Definitely a tough choice!
