Hey everyone! I'm in the process of building a new PC and currently have a Ryzen 7 5800XT paired with an RTX 2080 Ti, running at 1440p and 144hz. I plan to upgrade to the RTX 5070 Ti, but I'm also looking to switch to AM5 for the benefits of DDR5. Here's my dilemma: the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is about $350 now, while the Ryzen 7 9800X3D costs around $480. I'm curious whether the performance boost from the 7800X3D to the 9800X3D is worth the price increase, especially considering I'll be gaming around 85% of the time but also doing some video editing. Any insights would be appreciated!

If you’re mainly gaming, the difference between the 7800X3D and 9800X3D isn’t huge at 1440p. The 7800X3D should handle most games well enough without the need to invest an extra $120 for the 9800X3D. If your workload is mostly gaming, save that cash unless you plan to do intensive tasks where the 9800 may shine.
If you’re concerned about future-proofing, the 9800X3D might last longer with newer games, but the marginal improvements may not justify the extra cash right now. At 1440p, I think the 7800X3D is great value!
I appreciate the input! Sounds like a consensus is forming around the 7800X3D being the way to go.
With your planned usage, the 7800X3D should be more than capable of handling 1440p at high settings. Most benchmarks show that the 9800X3D has only a slight edge in certain games, so you’re not missing much. Plus, you’ll save a good chunk of change!
Exactly! The performance gaps narrow at higher resolutions, but if you're prioritizing gaming, stick with the 7800X3D.
From what I’ve seen, the 9800X3D is not needed for 1440p gaming unless you’re really pushing for max settings on every title. If you plan to upgrade the GPU later, the 7800X3D is likely the better option to keep costs in check.
Going for the 7800X3D is a solid choice for your build. The performance difference isn’t substantial, especially on 1440p. It allows you to allocate more budget elsewhere, like storage or even peripherals.
Thanks for the advice! I figured the difference might not be worth it, especially with most of my use being gaming.
