My PC won’t post on reboot but works with a hard reset—any ideas?

I've recently upgraded my CPU from an Intel i7-13700 to an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, paired with an Asus X870-A motherboard and 48GB of G.Skill 8000MHz RAM, all of which are listed as compatible on the motherboard's website. Now, I'm facing a really frustrating issue: when I restart my computer through Windows, it won't post, and there's a solid orange light on the motherboard. I've checked each RAM stick individually, and they work fine when only one is used. They are set to DOCP 1 for the correct RAM settings, but I even tried lowering the speed to 7200MHz, and the issue persisted. I've also confirmed that the motherboard has the latest BIOS update. This is so strange because I've never encountered this problem with my Intel setup. It's odd that the computer only fails to post during a reboot; a full shutdown and power-up work just fine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

How many M.2 slots does your new Asus motherboard have? Are you using both, or just one? Sometimes that can affect the boot process as well.

There are 2 M.2 slots, but I’m only using one for now.

Are you using a wired or wireless keyboard? I had a similar issue when I was using a wireless keyboard—it wouldn't reboot properly sometimes. Just a thought!

I'm using a wired keyboard along with a wireless Asus ROG mouse. This wasn't a problem before switching to Ryzen, though.

What diagnostic lights are you seeing? If it's solid orange, that might indicate an issue specifically with the CPU or RAM. But you mentioned it only happens after a reboot, so that’s pretty unusual.

The light is solid orange when it doesn’t boot. It’s just odd that everything works fine after I do a full shutdown.

Check if you have any USB flash drives plugged into the ports. Those can sometimes interfere with the boot process. If you have an external hard drive connected, it might be worth trying without it to see if that makes a difference.

Yeah, I do have an external HD connected. I’ll give that a shot and see if it helps.

You might want to try setting your RAM to 6000MHz instead. Sometimes auto settings can cause instability, and going a bit lower could help with post issues.

So you switched from an Intel CPU to an AMD one but kept the same motherboard? That’s a big change, right?

TechyNerd42 -

No, I changed both the CPU and motherboard as I mentioned, along with the RAM.

Just a heads up—Intel CPUs won't work with an AMD motherboard. You're all good there!

Have you tried resetting the BIOS to its default settings? That can often help with strange issues like this. Also, if you have access to another motherboard to test your components, that could be a good way to isolate the problem. There's a ton of variables at play here, so listing out what you've already done could be super helpful for anyone trying to assist you! If you have a tech-savvy friend or know a repair shop, they might be able to help diagnose it faster too.

I totally get that—it’s so frustrating! Especially since it only happens during reboot. Keep an eye on those default settings. It's funny how much of a difference those can make.

Default settings for the RAM seem to allow my system to restart without any issues… Hmm…
