I'm looking to upgrade my boyfriend's PC. He has a Ryzen 5 5500 processor, currently using my old 1660 Super. He previously had a 3050, but we swapped those. The motherboard is an Aorus model, which isn't that great and will need an upgrade later, but right now I want to focus on a new GPU. He has 16GB of RAM and plays games like 2K25-2K26, Valorant, Siege, and Elden Ring. His current setup struggles with 2K resolution, frequently crashing or showing low VRAM warnings. I'm considering options like the RX 6600, RX 6700, and RX 7600, but I need advice since I have a $400 budget for the upgrade. What GPU would pair best with the Ryzen 5 5500?

If it were me, I'd go for the 9060 XT 16GB and pair it with a 5600 or 5600X CPU. I'm currently running a 5600X with a 6750XT for 1440p gaming, and it's been an awesome combo. My CPU rarely gets maxed out, so you'll likely get good performance without worrying about bottlenecks too much.
You could find a used RTX 3060 for around $200, which would leave you some budget to upgrade the CPU and motherboard later. If you're leaning towards an all-out GPU upgrade, a new RX 9060 XT 16GB would be a solid choice at about $380.
